Debunking Chiburi

I have always been told by one of my instructors that chiburi is the act of removing blood from the sword, in fact he has even stated this at events and demonstrations. A skeptic as always, I set out to test whether or not chiburi techniques actually and effectively remove blood from a blade.

I was going to write an article, but then I realised it was too unwieldy and complicated, so I made a video instead. Enjoy, and try not to laugh too hard at my atrocious video editing skills!

Thanks for the show, I would think that as with many things in Japan and of Japan that it is simply a matter of form over function. As long as it looks sharp then it is done, regardless of how well it works.
